Well, this is what the carrier looks like today. A bit more work needed to finish completely but has improved much Straps needed a lot of cream to recover some flexibility but I managed to save them...only that they look darker than the rest

Looks great! - Now you just need the auxilary strap, and the protector for the aiming device ;-)

Sorry, I made a mistake in the previous pic. Don't know why but seems rifles were carried the other way round.

You still need to attach the small securing flap on top

I was wondering who would realise... Good sight Tom. Do you know where I can get a good hood for the rifle's front sight (at a reasonable price, of course...)

BTW I'm looking for a bolt in working condition numbered 2020, please let me know if anyone has one.

I was very lucky to find it in a local web, in Spain. Most probably it came during the Spanish Civil War as part of the German "help" to the Nationalist army (Franco's pro Nazi army). It is dated 1935 and has an early pre-war WaA stamp. Seems there was a little lot of these for sale in Germany not too long ago, but they all flew.

What is the correct Wehrmact Cavalry Backpack?

Not wishing to hi-jack this discussion in any way - but hoping to expand on my cavalry knowledge a little within this discussion … I wondered if any other Cavalry collectors could help me.

I have emailed TOM on his brilliant www.mp44.nl but I havent had a response - so I am hoping someone here - or he might be able to help me.

On Toms site he shows what appears to be a back pack in the centre of his cavalry equipment. As it is laid out for the photograph.

But in reality when I have investigated these bags it appears to me that they are side bags and there is a very specific adaptor which connects them - from their two hole connectors - down to a one unit - which then fastens to the saddle. My guess is that the 2 to 1 mount steadies it more.

Therefore his position of this in the illustration has caused me many sleepless nights trying to figure out how it actually fixes together !

I am trying to get my head around what EXACTLY is the correct rear back-pack worn by cavalry soldiers of the Wehrmacht. Or did they wear a ruck-sack and this is a larger side bag?

Also on Toms photographs he does not show how this pack would in reality fasten to the Y-straps… unless their loops are pushed through the top of the pack mounts and held by the clips… and without trying it - I don't know if this is even possible.

In fairness these types of pouches do have Y-strap loop clips at their bottom… so am I missing something - like an A-frame from the equation?

My question is this - does anyone know the correct back pack for Cavalry from the period and what does it fasten too?

Many thanks and Tom - your website is excellent. Thank you.

                        Regards

                        Gary

                          Hi Gary

I can't remember getting a mail.... (but I do get a lot, and some disappear in the spam box....)

Do you mind in resending the mail ??

                          Thanks,
                          Tom

                            HI Tom

Thanks for getting back to me… basically the email was asking the same questions below. I am just trying to figure out what the correct back pack is for the cavalry. Or if they just used a ruck-sack or Tornister or just a bag??

And then - how it fixed to the y-straps.

                            Regards

                            Gary

                                Gary:

                                To answer your question:

At first, the cavalry were equipped with the saddlebags M34.... one of these had straps, and could be carried as a backpack.

Later (1940) the saddlebags M40 were introduced (to replace the saddlebags M34, which they never did by the way)

Together with this set, a special set of Y straps were introduced with vertical D-rings, to adapt to the M40 backpack

hope this answers the question !

I'll try to illustrate it with pictures:

Saddlebag M34 (which could be carried as backpack)

Saddlebags M40 (on the left the backpack WITH adapter for saddle)

Saddlebag M40 on special cavalry Y-belt with vertical D-rings

And lastly a picture of the Special Y straps (in this case an even more rare webbing one)

                                Tom
