Flight computer

This is what the German pilots used to call a "Knemeyer" --- its a flight computer, much like the American E-6B. Every pilot trainee learns to use one. My ex-Luftwaffe friend (who gave me his pilots badge and flew JU-88's and ME-262's) still uses one. You can figure wind drift, convert meters/sec to knots, ground speed -- that sort of thing. It is a very nice instrument.
Your pouch indeed is for a Beobachter (Observer/navigator). Those aluminum channels on the back would slide into a slot in the airplane for easy access. I have one just like it though complete with all the tools, pencils, and so on.
