Inimicus, it's clear from the second set of photos you posted that yours did indeed have a strap at one time. As shown by my pics there are those that were made sans strap.

It's made without the retaining strap. A known variation.

The Germans most certainly made strapless tropical frogs. Here is a link showing clear images of my one;

The real question is, what year were the strapless tropical frogs made ? early or late ?
