    Reissued Italian mess kit

I just wanted to show this recent acquisition, an Italian mess kit re-issued to a German soldier. It shows some use inside and out but both halves still have nearly all of the original German Feldgrau paint and are also marked with the name of the Wehrmacht soldier who carried this, Friedrich Tillmanns. The tropical strap has always been with it, it has woven buttonholes- recycled from something else perhaps? This was brought back by a US Third Army veteran from Wisconsin.

Nice one! Often seen in period pictures.

Fine messkit, I haven't too many of those yet.
Erik, I'd be pleased to see a period picture, if by chance you have one available at hand. It would also illustrate the subject quite well.

A well known picture taken in Arnhem. The best I can do for now. I will try to find some more.

Hmm, seems I forgot a word in my previous post, I actually meant "I haven't seen too many of those yet".
Thanks for that picture Erik, a great illustration of those reissue messkits in use (a detail I never noticed).

                          Thanks for the pictures.
Especially the first one that I know quite well (I was about to say "by heart"), but never noticed this detail anyway. It was taken near Bad Reichenhall and shows 12 french prisoners of war from the Charlemagne Div. who were shot right away without any trial (!) on may 8, 1945... the day war ended in Europe.
