I think that they are rarer than german ones, paint is russian to, before 1941 Germans and Russians were best friends.

Well It's M36 soviet messkit. It is not so rare ( quite easy to find any of these ). They were designed on german M31 messkits. Were well used till 41 (you have last year of production). Germans often taken them as souvenirs ( as many other items ). The paint is typical pre / war time soviet color. It is not german paint. Soviets were using this color on everything ( helmets, messkits, canteens and other equipment and gear including airplanes, tanks, vehicles etc. )

After the war they war made by germans for war reparations and also used by DDR army.
