I've recently picked up a can opener identical to this one with the same markings WEHRMACHT on the handle. Is this a WWII period item?

Hello, markings look fake to me. Laser marking ? In all case they look more new than the wood.

It's weird item. The blade is very worn on mine, and it's looks like been used alot! The markings look fake and probably made with some kind of letterpress printing. I don't know..
I've found similar on eBay
