Strange way of wearing Y straps - too short?

Hello,

Browsing through the ,,Battle of the buldge. Then and now" I've came across some interesting pictures. German soldiers on those photos wear infantry Y straps with only one main straps attached, e.g. to the pouch.

I wonder why did they wear them in this way. Were those straps too short to wear them attached on both main straps?

Peter Adler´s y-strap is hooked into his MP40-pouch.

The others might came loose in battle, moving, carrying the MG 42 on the shoulder, etc.
