In the pictures you have posted, are there SS markings on it? From what is shown all I see is a relic gas mask holder?

It has remnants of black paint that's all, its original colour was black, not seen a black one before !

The black means that is has been over-painted at some point in it's life, no cannister came out the factory like this, they all were painted the typical green. I don't think the SS painted it's cannister black, they either left it in factory color or applied camouflage depending on the theatre they fought in.

this is not an early canister.

The missing lid inside may indicate post war use, many of these lids had an eagle stamped in them and this couldn't be accepted after the war, so to keep using these perfectly good cannisters many had that piece removed. Being painted black would support the post war use.
