    camouflaged leather equipment

Saw these in the Museum at "Dead mans corner" near Carentan last week while touring Normandy. I assume they are FJ items as most else was airborne related.
Was this common in late war FJ units? Is it mostly seen with airborne?

The wehrmacht and in particular the Heer and Luftwaffe camouflaged all kinds of equipment from 1941 onwards.
This was not a general rule given by the High Command but was done on individual initiative in several units.

All the equiment exposed in DMC came from the neighborhood of Carentan so one can assume that this is from a FJR/ LW Felddivision.

But as I said the Heer also did this on a larger scale.
(you can see camouflage on all leather equipment, gasmask canisters, ammo boxes, weapons, binocular cases,....)

The camouflage was done by paint brush or airbrush.

Jan: I was more interested in the leather camo : It is commonly seen on metallic equipment ; the point being the paint would often peel from flexible leather surfaces……..

          Paul,

For sure they also did this on leather items. They used petrol thinned "tarnpaste" for this. The waterbased paint would peel much easier of then the petrolbased.
I've seen a lot of painted leather equipment even a rifle sling, but there was very few paint left due to (as you said) friction and being way too flexible.
The camouflage of leather items was done by the Heer as by the Luftwaffe. So it is hard to say if this was only done by FJ units. But one can say that mostly Luftwaffe camo stuff is found.
