Entrenching Tool / Shovel + 2 Carriers

Hello All,

I know I have a WWI Era shovel, of probable Russian manufacture. The Carrier and Shovel are both marked "SA" for the Finnish Army. There is the remainder of green paint (post WWII?)

The shovel is dated 1916 and is marked with what appears to be an "H" in a circle and "K.W."

The carrier is marked "HERMANN KAUFMANN BERLIN N. 37"

Does anyone know what the shovel (maker?) marks mean? What do I have here with the shovel and carrier?

2ND Carrier:

The second carrier is entirely different, but looks like material and construct of WWII. The only marking I could find was a Third Reich Eagle. Any thoughts on the origin?

Hi dc9,
First one, as you say, is a Russian spade with a WW1 German carrier, both re-stamped "SA" by the Fins. No idea what the "H" manufacturer mark is (looks more like a Cyrillic "K" in an octagon to me).

Second one (carrier only) looks like post-war DDR, not German WW2. I would guess the Eagle stamp is a later embellishment , to make it appear WW2.

Hello dc9 there is a lot here I agree all spades shown are of Russian origin the punched hole was the Imperial Russian Czar mark punched out by the reds cyrilliac marks Russian army acceptance and dates on your shovels. I also agree one of the covers marked SA are German WW1 Finland acquired many items from German surplus after the war and stamped it SA for the Soumi Army finish army spelling may not be correct other one could be about any europeon maker and stamped with a Waa to help sell it could be East German early one. Anyway all are nice tools and the German WW1 SA marked carrier is getting hard to find as you may know Germans also used this as captured equipment in WW2 plenty of period photo's of them carring foreign spades and carriers. timothy
