It seems he has binoculars, map case and MP38, but yet he is not an NCO. That seems unusual to me, anyone else?

Since he doesn't have MP mag pouches it would be wise to take some spare mag's in breadbag...

May 1940, and already with Y straps, also not very often seen

Maybe he's an Obergefreiter who already made it to Gruppenführer, who knows...... to bad we can't see the other sleeve of this soldier

Nice photo! You will almost see MPs in wartime photos with the stock unfolded. I try to tell the yahoos I see shoot these on ranges that you don't fire them with the stock folded. Other than Hollywood!

The back of the photo perhaps tells the story if you can read German.

Actually the photo is part of a group that was shot on June 14, 1940.

I was in error in saying it was May 2...very sorry!

Probably during the invasion of France. It contains the French word "petit" (small). "Reclus"? Le Reclus is a French village in the Elzas.

And the person on the picture is a Feldwebel. The third lines says "Fw ...[name]"

"am Petit Marin bei Reclus" ?
hard to read. Anyone here knows to read Sutterlin?
