I think it is maybe a POW mess kit that hand the handle bar removed?
Or it was used after the war and someone removed the bar.
Because there are rivets and the bottom shows wear.
Also I think the lines that indicate half liter, one liter are missing on late mess kits - not 100% sure about that though.
Or maybe it is late war... it does not have a maker mark on the side?

for sure, the ankle is missing but was present as you can see the prints
the handle seems to be stronger than usual.
There were always made of steel during WW2 and that seems not to be the case here. You can check that point
I agree with screensize : the lines for the ration of soup disappeared near 1942
according to that I don't think it is german 1931 pattern ww2 period one
