I have seen similar concept as barrel carriers for MG15...but this one is a bit..different? As someone suggested, could it be for some kind of tripod? Anyhow, have a look at this other thread:

Pretty sure it's a tripod case for use by the cavalry. Attaches to the saddle somehow.
That's what I've been told by those more learned than me.
