    Mid War Breadbag Questions

    Hello All!

I recently acquired a mint, mid-war Heer breadbag (no leather on belt support straps) and have a few questions I was hoping some people may be able to answer. The material is the rougher type of cloth more of a OD green color and the leather for the inside fastening straps and D rings is black and pebbled. No inside divider. The belt support buttons, belt hook, and D rings are all magnetic and a gray color. No problems so far.

    Here are my questions:

The inside straps are also black dyed on the un-pebbled sides. I thought these are normally natural brown underneath? I don't recall seeing any examples where these straps are black underneath. Not that I care, just want it to be original.

The three inside buttons under the flap are all shiney, but magnetic with three holes where they are sewed on. Thread matches the rest of the bag, also did a burn test on a small piece of loose thread and it did not melt. I thought these inside buttons would be gray like the outside buttons and D rings? I have a Luftwaffe one where all the metal hardware is the same.

Finally, can a black light test be done on a breadbag or field gear in general to check the threads/stitching? I am not all that familiar with this test and from what I have read it is only a useful guide for white cloth or paper.

If I have time this weekend I may be able to take some photos and post them.

    Thanks for your time!

    Hi Glen.....

I don't hear any red signs ... but pictures would help

Different sort of buttons is not that strange... I've seen more (original attached) different buttons on one breadbag

The shiny steel type sounds more like mid war - late war

Also the more rough type cloth sounds like late war

As for the straps.... haven't noticed this before, but I'll check my breadbags

Like I said before, pictures would help

      Hi Tom,

Here are a few photos that I think should help. There is also a faint marking on the belt hook strap, I am guessing it is a RBN but I cannot make it out.

The different interior buttons and black dye to the underside/rough side of the interior straps threw me. Otherwise I think it is a good bag. Opinions are appreciated!

      Thank you in advance!

Love the olive thread on the front/d-ring tabs! I'd not seen on bbs before.

Judging by the comments, it looks like I did OK with this one. I can't believe the condition considering it is about 70 yrs old. It looks like it was made yesterday! I was curious and did a black light test on it and the OD stitching comes up with a light green color and it made me worry until I read this only works on the color white.

Thank you all for your input!
