What is this ?? Any ideas are welcome

I was emailed these photos by a "picker" friend who wants me to buy this from him. I have no clue as to what it is. He was told it was WW2 German, but it could be from Iraq for all I know. It was found near Ft. Campbell, KY, home of the 101st Airborne division, so it could have been brought back by someone anytime between 1945 and today.

Any ideas ???
