Another piece of cavalry related items :)

    Hi guys

    For all of you horse-lovers

Another piece I found recently !! very happy with it as most of them are used up after the war I guess.... these are very difficult to find (have been searching for years now)

here it is, an original "Tränkeimer" (water bag)

    and the bottom

With the picture of the H.Dv.

    More examples out there !!

@jan r , I know you have one... can I put Ludies picture here with the bag in use ???

Here is the underside of the above Tränkeimer with the still visible markings,

These Tränkeimer were originaly intended to be used, like the name says, has water buckets that could be easily stored away. In reality these were more used has a feed bag. The first models, like the ones showed here, had the typical canvas cross but only a single piece canvas bottom. This made that when used has a feed bag these were worn out very fast. So much that in the first winter in Russia there was a critical shortage of these bags. Often the feed of the horses was then given on the ground, because of this the horses took to much sand in, resulting that many died of colic. Most units then started to make small wooden feed kribs that were transported in the units wagons.
The new production of Tränkeimer were consequently then made with a stronger bottom of two layers of thick canvas, and simplified by using a friction buckle of simply a knot.
Another function was that the Tränkeimer when filled with wet hay, straw or grass could be used has a emergency horse gas mask.

        Friction buckle,

        Knot,

        Double layer bottom,

Then there is this purpose made feed bag in the more classic style.

            Hi Jan

Thanks very much for showing these.... I didn't know these variations... (I'll be on the lookout for these)

Also very interesting read on the shortage on these

As for the reactions I see that there aren't very much cavalry collectors here

            @ Scott

Don't forget to put pictures up when you'r done even if it is 1/6 scale... I'd love to see pictures.

It's been some time since I've posted anything , but seeing these Trankeimer I had to say something about mine. Mine's the same as Jan's , some maker mark but dated 1940, with early aluminum roller buckle. Yes, these are very hard to find let alone in, I mean, good and still useable condition. I tested mine the other day and it will still hold water. Not to go off subject but has anyone ever seen a steel mane comb because I have one with a faded wa on it.

Never seen one in steel, only in aluminium, very well possible that steel ones are then later war productions.

                dated aluminium one,

Thanks Tom, good to know who produced it.

                    Here is also another piece of cavalry related items;

A horse sweat cover, this was used to cool horses down after work. These covers come in a variation of colors, from broken white to green. Very difficult to find these days, I suspect that many of these covers were probably cut up in recent years do make fake Stgw 44 pouches...

I couldn't tell you for certain but mine came from around Normandy. I purchased it for 1 Euro a number of years ago and sold all my early war ones because I never seen this one before. When I'm done traveling I'll post some pictures.

Nice items here guys, I still need a feeding / water bag for my horse ;-)

Indeed not a lot of Cavalry collectors out there but they don't know what
                            they're missing!

I have seen an iron comb in the past, I have an aluminium WaA marked
                            one in my collection.

The prices seem to vary from 20 to 40 euros, along the demand...
