    Jäger Canteen (only) cup?

    Can anyone answer:
Was this stye cup (small machined aluminum) only used on the larger, 1L canteens which were for Medics or supposedly Jäger troops? There seems to be disagreement in various sources. Thanks in advance. Michael

As far as I'm concerned... I've seen these used on medical canteens.... I don't know of other use, but I never investigated this, maybe there are more knowledge-able members

Is the canteen you show stamped on all parts with EEF 43 ? (cup / strap / cover etc.)

      Hi Tom,
The canteen body is an ESB 42. The felt and strap are stamped - both 42, but the letter codes are blurred and not readable. Thanks for the opinion

I have seen these often on 1l. Gebirgsjäger canteens as well as on medical canteens. But this is just an observation, I´m no expert on these.

Well, thats interesting, because I got a coconut lately and it had a black aluminium cup, same year as the canteen, but I thought it was misplaced from another canteen (medic/Gebirgsjäger). I thought coconuts either had the standard green metal or the bakelite cups. Of course cups and canteens also got mixed up when reisued amongst the troops. Maybe the "canteen-people" can shed more light on this (Mulon and others?)?

              It's really hard to see.
In recent years I have always looked for only matching canteens just to give me answers to many questions I was doing myself .... ... and many of the questions I was doing myself (and what I do I still ....) regard the products of middle/end war in green painted aluminum, whether they are marked FWBN, EEF or unmarked. I've never found mataching canteens with these glasses and so, for me, is hard to say anything. The only thing I'm pretty sure (going by logic) is that these two producers (FWBN and EEF) have, at one moment of the war, candle started to produce cups (conic or standard) for other producers, but these are just theories. This type of cup (green alu conic) I have seen always together only on 1 liter canteens and/or coconut type... ... but that doesn't mean they haven't been fitted even on standard 750cl canteens. I have had only two of these cups, and one I put on a 750cl canteen but only for a matter of personal taste ... .... it is like the MOM on dad.
As usual we should do research on period photos but, as you well know, is not easy.So to be on the safe side, ok for coconut and 1 liter canteens, more than legitimate concerns for those in standard capacity 750cl.

                  Hi MULON,

Not to Hijack the tread, but from your experience, would a GNL 43 black painted conic alu cup belong only on a medical canteen, or was black painted conic cups also used on Gebirgsjäger/Coconuts? Or were these always green painted post 1939?

                  Regards Sonnenwende

Sure on GBJ canteens (classic and with seplified straps), I sow more and more example with this configuration. On cocco canteen you can find more configuration expecially from late 42 (conic bakelite or alu black or green, standard alu black or green, standard steel green or unfinished red)

I never seen before one with this early year, only ed always from 42 to up.

Remember that the OKW issued a decree just in 1941 when it was said that all the effects were supposed to be colored in green. (HM41 N°435 -23 aprile 1941)

Thanks for sharing your knowledge MULON, I did not know that the general order to paint the cups green came into effect as late as 1941...

But a black painted 43 dated conic alu cup could well have been issued with a 43 dated coconutt canteen?

On medical canteens I thought the cups were always black painted?

Have a look here, there are an close up of my collection.
In the third row you can see only 1L canteens, 3 of them have alu black conic cup....and are 100% wartime applied.
To me these canteen are GBJ.

I'm impressed to see all those canteens in chronological order. From which year did they switch to steel clips from the thick aluminum ones? Was it around 41?
