Your Spiess was more systematic I see. Can we also see the cover of your book?

Here is a picture of the cover of the Spießbuch, the book itself is quite small, only 15,5cm x 11cm but it has a LOT of information.

Here is a photograph of the Spieß himself as an Oberfeldwebel.

Thank you for showing. I think they must have come in a standard size. Mine is 15 x 10 x 3. Yours must be his old book that he took out of the leather cover when putting a fresh one in.

Wow, that second booklet contains all the info that is needed to make a complete casualty list of the company over time, and to research all the soldiers; just as good as the secret info at the WASt that no one is allowed to see!
I wish I could have such a booklet for the units that were in southern France!

As most of the casualties in the book were from 1942/1943 I think you are right. I asked myself quite a couple of times why there were no casualties of the other years but never thought about that.

True! In regard to those who were killed in action he also wrote down the cause of their death and where they were buried. The Spieß even wrote that in case he was killed in action himself the book should be returned to the Wehrmachtsauskunftstelle für Kriegerverluste und Kriegsgefangene. I have tried to do some research about the soldiers listed in the book and so far I managed to find relatives of one soldier.

I guessed it was an older book, because you said it was full and because the owner had put a label
                    on it for archiving.
