    German Messkit "SAARGRUBEN"

    Hi,
Just wanted to share with you a piece of field gear I purchased when I was in Germany..

The Messkit is hallmarked "MN45" and both the lid and bottom are stamped "SAARGRUBEN" with the crossed hammers.

    I like it...but I don't know that much about SAAR mining group/organization.

    Thanks,

      German Messkit "SAARGRUBEN"

I did own two (2) leather ciger cases which had the "SAARGRUBEN" logo with hammer but with eagle and Swaztika on the breast od the eagle. But they were sold...long gone.

I had a mess kit marked identically to that one but unfortunately I sold it about 20 years ago at a Houston Texas gun show.

          hello

It is the first time for me to see such mark

here is a supposition : as this mess kit is a later one, may be the factory used old spare parts, I mean "before war or early war production" parts when factories used to put their logo every where.

during the war this possibility dissappeared but now in 1945, as metal became seldom, they used what they had, includind old stocks.

In anyway at this year of the war it is obvious that they had something else to do than puttind nicely done logo IMO

IMO wartime produced Mess kit reused by mining company postwar.

              Saar

              hi,..
              i´m from the area Saarland,..
since some time after der end of the WKII, the french government has the Saargruben under his"LAW"....
the GRUBEN are carbon mine´s,...around Saarbrücken-Völklingen
this "mess-kit", was for eat and drink, it was the same like the solders have in the wehrmacht.

              regards

I lived in Schoernenberg-Kuebelberg and worked in the Kaiserslautern area on a US Army base...I bought this in the Saarbrucken area...I think at the fleamarket there. It does make sense...wish I had pictures of the cigar cases to go with it. The Saar is full of steel factories..or should I say Used" to be full of them. This does make sense....since it's 45 dated.

Some people, including me think the MN maker mark stands for "Menesa Neunkirchen". Which in this case makes very much sense since in Neunkirchen and in the direct neighbouring area alone were 6 of the mines of the "Saargruben". All other mines weren't far away either.

Neunkirchen..Saar...I know it well. Used to gothere a lot..and used to have a girlfriend from there. In the 70"s...Neunkirchen was a busy town...now...it's kinda quiet. I was last there in 2007.

It does make sense...I also picked up many many messkits dated 1945 and 44 with the hallmarked "MN"
