tropical mess tin

hello guys,
Could someone please take a look at this mess tin and give me their opinion:

I know the pics are quite small but this is all I have.
Was it common tropical items to have the red paint on the inside?
What exactly was the purpose of the red.
Does this tin look like a good one ?

Looks like a nice late-war steel messtin!
Is it dated? I would say at earliest 1944...

The red inside is a "primer" (sp?) to prevent rusting. This red paint was also found on the inside of steel cups from waterbottles, and I have even seen MG-patronenkaste painted red inside.

The outside color is the well known late war tan color, often mis-used as being a AK-color.

looks good to me, the red paint is a red enamel that was put on some messtins, this was usually found in a red or blueish shade. they are usually worth more as it is not too common to find them these days. i have one in my collection just like yours which was ground dug in latvia, i attatched the photos

not necessarily, mine is dated 1942, so i suppose they started enameling the inside as early as 42.
