    U-Boat Goggles?

bought a huge collection of leather pouches, and field gear from a guy, there were about 7-8 pairs of these in the one leather pouch, looks unissued to me, as do all the sets, they came in a little green storage pouch as well, with a single button on the front. Opinions welcome please!! I know some call them U-boat goggles, but they probably were used for other units. they all have the red lenses to them.

I think they are multi purpose googles, not specifically designed for U-boats

I believe the red filter goggles are for twilight use or low light hours. They would be used in submarines, open bunkers or other.

notice that higher part of glass is darker, good for loking at horizon line

              Hello duv,

There is a difference: the first gogles are red filter glasses with black rubber frame, your's have a tan or dark filter and green rubber, that would be used in sunny conditions. I had never seen them in two tone glasses!!

Have a set of Auer goggles with the "two tone glasses". They are in relic condition but the only two-tone example I have ever been able to find. Rare as hen's teeth. I am told, they were used by gunners for shooting into the sun or at a sun lit horizon.

Will look them out and arrange to get some images posted,

                  Chris

Thank you "ebony", hope these are of interest.

I have asked ebony to post one more image to try and show how these are made of 3 pieces of glass. The bottom piece closest to the eye is one round piece of glass in a tan tint of shading. Then on the outer side is a very dark tinted half moon of glass at the top with another seperate lighter tinted half moon of glass below it.

They seemingingly were found years after the war laying on the battlefield and have sadly suffered badly from the elements. Despite that they still work nicely. You can look at the sun through the top and pin point your aim through the density reduction tint at the bottom.

Now that is a German quality product. Had heard about this model of "Auer" goggles over the years but never seen one until I found these.

"Rare" is an under statement but who knows may be another member may be kind enough to post any they might have,

                              Chris
