Is there a Company name and city for the DOWA extract? I don't have a problem with the margarine carton. The Wehrm can is definately wartime. Now whether is was used by the military can be debated. I'm writing Vol II of the ration book and I have a lot of new information on the black plate cans. I didn't see a product code which would definately establish it was used for the military. This type of can was also used for POWs, stamped as tax free or provided to civilians for home canning. Excess stocks were used after the war for feeding the civilian population.

The Nescafe tin is still a mystery. A lot of info on the Nestle company is included in Vol II. Necafe was introduced in 1938 and I have located pictures of cans from Switzerland, France, the US, and the Uk which are wartime. They look similar to the tin you have. Of course yours is missing the paper label. The Nestle wartime logo which would have been on the paper logo was used into the 1960s. All the postwar Nescafe lids I've seen are stamped Nestle over the bird nest. I believe that lids stamped Nescafe are probably wartime. I'm still gathering info.

From the sketchy history I was able to find: Nescafe was introduced to Germany in 1943 and was only produced at the Kappeln factory. The kappeln factory was supposedely the only factory still operating in Germany by 1943. I believe all of that information is incorrect. I think that Nescafe was introduced in Germany the same time it was introduced to the rest of the world-1938. I also have a Dec 1943 ad for another Nestle factory operating in Germany. So a lot of questions still out there. I did ask the company for help but haven't heard back.

Another tidbit in Vol II. The manager of the Kappeln factory was a Swiss national. He didn't cooperate with Allied interrogaters after the war in order to protect Patent info.

                          Jim

Thank you very much for your help Jim. I need to seriously think about buying your book vol. I ( the bad aspect is that will cost a lot of money here in Poland as books here are very expensive ) and following vol.II .

as I found out the NESCAFE was , as you introduced in 1938 and 1943 for army use but nothing more.

as for DOWA I found out that it exist from 1934 .

The tin is marked DOWA SUPPENEXTRAKTE G.M.B.H NURNBERG . I hope that will help.

what about the snuff tobacco tin ? couldit be pre war or wartime ? The only information I found was that SINGLETON' & COLE Ltd. existed from end of XIX century ( around 1892 ).
Thank one more time for you help Jim.

                              Hi Marcin,

The factory that manufactured the DOWA extract was founded in 1934 and bombed during the war. The DOWA brand was a wartime brand name. After the war it moved to Schwaig Pegnitztal outside Nurnberg. I'll keep researching but I believe the tin is good.

I'm not much use on snuff tins but from the limited research I did I believe the tin dates from the 1950s to 1970s. That brand of snuff is still being made in Germany.

Specialty books are expensive everywhere. The audience is so limited that publishers have to charge a premium in order to turn profit. It will be years before Vol II comes out, so you don't need to worry about it for a while. I'm still waiting word from Schiffer on whether they want to publish it or not.

I attached a picture showing a Nescafe tin (right) with paper label that I believe may be wartime. The lid is identical to yours. The ad on the left is from the 1950s. It has a Nescafe lid but the paper label is different from the other (wartime?) tin. Its a bit confusing.

                              Jim
