NO book /magazine is the holy bible, with no mistakes inside.
Interesting site-note: Its known that in those magazines wrong captions were used knowingly to better sell of questionable stuff....

Sorry but i think that you're wrong here Patrick. The late type with toe cap is not a mixture of M37 and M44 ankle boots. The "mixture" is what some american collectors call the M43 ankle boot, which is a M37 with eyelets only (no hooks). I'd rather to call it simplified M37 (or hybrid).
That's make four distinct STANDARD ankle boots used in the WWII german army, not three.
M37, M37 simplified, M44 and late type with toe cap.
Concerning the article in the magazine mentioned, there is no mistake, no wrong caption. Sometimes that's the reader who does understand what he wants to understand or does see what he wants to see.
For you to see what i call the simplified M37
Internal rear part as the M37, but eyelet only for the laces, no hooksAttached FilesLast edited by JPhilip; 01-05-2011, 05:29 AM.

So, apart from that we have the well known M37 modell, and the simplified M37 (wich in my eyes is still a M37, no matter if only eyelets are used, or other little changes in production) - but lets call that a modell of its own, too.
A 4th modell is the mixture of ankle and mountain boots (I guess you call that one an M44), but thats it.
I dont know that specific french MM magazine, but been told it only differs 2 models.
Anway, the boots that started this thread are not german WWII military issue.

The M44 type is the ankle boot adopted at the same time than the Neue Uniform in september 1944 (AHM n° 603 of 25 september 1944 which was released in October 1944).
It's almost the same than the simplified M37 but the rear part is external instead of being internal as seen on my photo. It has been produced earlier than 1944, but was officially adopted in september 44.
in fine, that's make :
M37 : internal rear part, eyelets and hooks, plus all other features
M37 simplified : internal rear part, eyelets only, plus all other features
M44 : external rear part, eyelets only, plus all other features
Type with toe cap that comes in two configurations : one normal with hobnails and u-shape iron on the heel, and one with hobnails, ski heel and cleating.
There are variants to the M37 simplified and M44 types, they usually come with a band of wool sewn inside at the top of the shaft.
and there are also mixtures of standard and mountain ankle boots...
Concerning the french magazine, if you don't know it, try to have a look, sometimes it's worth it...
