I've got one with the same stamp (man with shovel), undated, with an early brown leather cover. The buckle is at the right, not left. By the way, shouldn't you put the cover such a way that the hollow part is outside?

When an Idealspaten shovel is not dated, usually it means that the tool is postwar...with some different features than wartime ones...

I don't think it is post war but pre war (brown leather), as it surely came with 'the German Help' to this part of the world, between 1936-39

Leather Carrier dated no doubt about that one...shovel looks old to me but you need to do a search about this producer and find out why some have date stamped and some other not....

This shovel is part of the 'non interventional' German help to the spanish Nationalist army (Franco) and , Condor Legion apart, meant a lot of german army surplus and old fashined weapons, together with mod. 35 helmets and mod 30 gas masks. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Reichwehr model.

This is not the shovel i was talking about as a postwar tool...to the best of my knowledge, the shovel shown here should be a pre-1934 production.

The shovel i was refering to is the one with the rear of the blade folded on the wrong side of the blade, the folded "ears" being visible on the front of the blade instead of being at the back as for wartime produced tools. These postwar tools are undated and often stamped with P.P. on the wooden handle.

Can't really tell about the shovel.... but cover looks postwar to me.....

I only know these "buckle on the wrong side" as post war (BGS or early nund ?? or NVA )

here a picture of such a cover in use... are these BGS ???

Also nice to see the post war coconut canteens in use here as well as the light Zelts....

Tom, see that the construction of the cover is not the same: mine has the hanging loops sewn on the 'outside', while the ones on the photo are not on the 'outside' or even sewn but riveted.
