I bought this nice canteen from a polisch friend of mine who found it in krakow on the flea market.
nice early ak marked hre42 canteen with web straps and brown bakelite cup withvery nice surprise.

If there is anybody who can tell me more about the unit please lett me know

It is first hand find yes, never cleaned or whatso ever,nice honest patina. i like this one so much,very honest find for a very nice price
i think it means 4 schwere mg kompagnie, infanterie ersatz abteilung 170 ??

I would say: Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 170, and then the 4th (heavy) kompanie.

We see the issue of these flasks hashed back and forth in thread after thread as to their actual use in North Africa. Most conceed that while this flask probably did see use there along with everywhere else, it is not what most DAK personel carried and is not a DAK or even tropical item specifically.

Now we are presented with what appears to be a nice example with actual North Africa related personalization... on a material that is easliy scribed on and does not give good hint as to when it was actually done.

None of us were there when the cup was engraved. But I have to ask if anyone here has given any thought to the possiblity that maybe they could have been?

Just funny...

I know this canteen very well.

I saw it for the first time two years ago, at famous militaria fair in Kassel / Germany. Bought by my friend - just from a militaria dealer there....

Then brought to Poland and sold to another collector. Not much profit, cause it is not possible to determine it - original or not.

For sure not first hand find, but mostly third, fourth or even more hands find.

Just again - buy the item, not the story.
