    Eiserne Portion / Nahkampfpacken Help!

Hello, I am looking for information on Eiserne Portion (Iron Rations) and Nahkampfpacken (Close Combat "blood sugar booster"). If anyone has photos of originals in their collection, or knows the specifics of what they entailed please drop me a line, any photos are welcome

Definitive information on the Iron Ration is very thin. I have yet to see a picture of them being issued or being used in the field.

I have an original manual (H.Dv. 86/1) titled " Regulations for the Rations of the Armed Forces" dated 1940. There is a section that deals with the Iron Rations that I have translated. I also have an article that covers confection close combat rations.

I will fax you copies of both if you are interested.

Yes, be sure to look at the Confection Ration posting as stated above! That stuff is rarer than any dagger or badge!

To date, the best info I have seen on this subject is on the web page of "Der Erste Zug". They give dimensions and descriptions of the cans of meat in them, as well as a description of the sorts of crackers too. Also I have a photo of a can from an iron ration...I think it might have come from somewhere on this forum....it is the same proportion as the ones noted on "Der Erste Zug". It has a thin coat of reddish laquer too.
If you seach this forum you can find some pictures of Kanckebrot boxes, these were sometimes part of iron rations too.
I think they also have a photo or description of the bag for the iron ration - if not, I'll look for where I saw it.
The size of meat cans were the same as a cylindrical can used for oysters and such - smooth sided, 2 5/8ths by 3". There is NOTHING in my end of the state, meatwise, in such a sized can except oysters! I did find some canned barbecue in a slightly taller can.
After I get home from the forge I'll see what else I can dig up - I'm in a litttle hurry.

        Dave

            Hi All,

Check out the Mike Beaver Book on WEHRMACHT Camo uniforms I can't recall the page but there is a great photo of a Grenadier with an open box of Confection Rations--one of the reasons I bought the book!!

            regards
