congratulations, it looks in good shape....got that authentic dusty patina and the thread alum shines like new. nice clasp too. it would be interesting to chart all the web harness variants for this type of bottle...olive/tans etc and the different front clasps/metal holes and buckles etc...

Here's mine, found a few years ago in Estonia. Note the dark brown cup

As for the date 42, I have around ten of them, there are 43's found here in Estonia, too, but no other dates (as far as I know). I know that 44 is pretty rare, but what's the thing with 42? Is that Ritter plant produced the largest amount of "cocos" this year?

must check period dates/situations...though perhaps by 42/43 the conquering of afrika and the tropics may have been a fading dream...so perhaps a surplus of 42 made canteens sufficed for the later stages in the war, where europe-style kit would have otherwise been used. hence normandy 44's well charted 'ak' water bottle use...
what i find interesting is the thought that, as with the 'tan' colour change in (42?) for most kit, would the germans have expected to replace leather totally with canvas? by 44 and normandy we have seen the widening of the intention of equipping men with canvas-web gear, water bottles for example. perhaps full webbing- isation was the future...spade covers, frogs, bottle straps, holsters, the works...who's to say. nice second bottle by the way. a good lesson for those new to the hobby----web kit doth not AK immer make.
