Other that the possibly dubious SS markings, there is nothing "custom" about the bag. It is a standard, left side saddle bag from the Model 1934 cavalry rig. This saddle bag was factory configured to double as a backpack when the rider was dismounted.

I can't really comment on the markings other that exercise a healthy dose of skepticism. They might well be real, but then again SS embellishments are some of the faker favorites.

Wesley, thanks for your input. The pics from my phone camera aren't really great as it misses the details.
But I bought the rig today at such a low price that any hickey should be quite negligible, if any. The quality of the leather and workmanship is quite high.
The dealer said that this was made from a saddle but I think from your input that she could have meant from a saddle bag as opposed from tearing apart a saddle as we normally think of since she wasn't there and likely transposed whatever she heard from her source of this bag.
I will post some more clear pics of the important parts in a day or so from a good digital and tripod.
Hope that you will be able to better ascertain an opinion.

Van,

Best of luck with the markings, I hope they prove out for you. As for the saddlebag. Typical early to mid war German leather gear is of high quality. I still would say that this is not something made from a saddle bag, but is a factorystandard saddle bag. No custom work has been done to it other than the markings.

The markings do not look convincing to me. Is there an umlaut (two dots) over the "ü" in "Führer"? From the pictures it appears to me that there is not.

Well, hopefully he is not out too much on this one... in all honesty the bag is not all that nice and example either. It is looks heavily discolored in the photos like it has been conditioned with something. This bag should have a rich, russet color to it, almost orange. I think I might see some blown out stitching on one of the shoulder straps as well.

new thread per advice to SS forum

I've tried to provide some discussion points on the question of whether this saddle bag is a legit SS item owned by Oberfuehrer Alfred Borchert. I posted a thread today on the SS forum under "SS saddle bag - is it legit?" for those who have viewed the subject on this forum but might miss it on the other forum.
Again, thoughts but especially any supporting evidence for opinions will be appreciated.
