Angolia's Army Uniforms & Traditions book explained "A carrier, with a 1936 production year stamp, has a different, spring-operated, closing devise on the hinged cover; probably an experimental carrier for the M1930", but didn't have it illustrated, so when read that long ago, I thought it was so rare that they didn't even have an example to show. But since then I've seen enough of these to know that they aren't rare and they cost the same as the others.
Nonetheless it's a variation worth having, I think

I Also like the Brass hardware! My set doesnt have these but it is also dated 36 and has the same opening style as yours...the strap is dated 1937, and brass was not being used then..does your straps have a date on them?
Nice!

It's not rare but not common either. This gasmask can was made just before the eagle with swastika stamp came into action. Later on these cannisters were largly given out to luftshutz. I have one with a name of Company stamped inside the lid (in ink) togheter with a 1943 dated GM38 (with blue parts) and 1944 marked straps. These sets were put togheter from various stocks to supply luftschutz and the like.
