I also have a mess tin that tells the story of a german soldier.
It's written almost exactly the same way as yours.

The only difference is that this soldier didn't went to Russia but to Germany, Norwege, France, Polen and lot's of other places.

The tin has most of it's paint remaining.
I'll post pictures if I have time!

I like yours better, because he has been in Russia, what interests me more.

There is a similar messtin on display at the KZ musuem at Sachsenhausen. The only trouble is its a BW one and is dated 1983!!!

However I will not hijack this thread and start a new one.

nice thread...feel it will grow and grow...i love the way the marks are left...a steady hand put those letters into the aluminum....quite a common-place habit it would seem, esp amongst pows...with little other belongings. there's a small book potentially here!

have been taking some time to find out more about the history of this messtin

after Poland this batallion was part of the 17th army (army group south, divided into army group A after aug 42) during operation barbarossa, the invasion of Russia

The places names on this tin correspond to the movement of this army group through Russia/Ukraine,

some extracts of what I found related to places on this tin

In 1942, Army Group South was to spearhead the German summer offensive in Russia known as Case Blue (Fall Blau). The 17th Army was to give flank protection to 1st Panzer Army as it struck towards the Don River.

While Army Group B struck towards Stalingrad, Army Group A and the 17th Army attacked towards the Caucasus oilfields in what was to be known as the Battle of the Caucasus.

However, by December with Soviet forces en-circled the 6th Army at Stalingrad, Army Group B withdrew from Southern Russia but 17th Army was ordered to hold the Kuban Bridgehead. Hitler demanded a three-mile road and rail bridge across the Strait of Kerch in spring 1943 to support a push through the Caucasus to Persia, although the Cable Railway (Aerial tramway) which went into operation on July 14 with a daily capacity of one thousand tons was adequate for the defensive needs of the 17th Army in the Kuban Bridgehead
