I should be happy for this thread
The seller from ebay offered the nebelkerze to me for a directbuy-he wanted 350,-EUR.
I wonder who copied it? And of course it's well done.

For some reason I'm happy not loosing 350,- bugs for nothing

                      Hi all,

I already saw these at La Gleize last year, at the stand of a German I believe... Also looking for a (pre-war) Nebelkerze 39, I was interested, but after looking more closely and after debating with several friends, I (luckily) decided not to buy it... It is really well faked, good enough to fool anybody!

It COULD be the work of a very skilled Belgian collector, who made a lot of Stielgranate and some other rare items of German and allied ordnance some years ago. A very honest guy, he sold these pieces not as originals (fakes), but as 'reproductions' for musea or for collectors who didn't want to soil their uniforms with greasy dug-up Stielgranate etc... The US Army paratrooper in the D-Day-diorama at the Brussels Army Museum wears what seems to be a similar reproduction of a Hawkins mine, of course in mint condition... This very skilled artisan tragically passed away more than 2 years ago, but his 'works of art' (I really consider them that way...) still change hands at the larger shows in Western Europe and, of course, on the Net. Most of the time, unfortunately, these pieces are sold as originals... This was NEVER the goal of the maker, who obviously cannot be blamed for the fraud with his products...

The lettering, the label and the sheet metal all point in this direction, although I myself never was offered one of the Nb.K. before, certainly not by the maker... There are lots of pieces around, but most of them are easily recognisable (at closer look anyway). The Stielgranate (there are even Nebelgranate!) have brass screw caps (more easy to stamp) and the sheet metal of the heads is too thick. The labels have a spelling mistake, similar to the Nb.K. in this thread. Look very closely to the label: the sentence reads 'Lebensgefahr Beim Abbrennen in geschlossenen Räumen', which seems to be correct. But the capital 'B' of 'Beim' should be a minor letter, because it's not a noun (capital letter in German) but an adverb, and it's not the first word in the sentence! These labels are exactly the same as the labels the maker used on his Nebelgranate, of which I sold several examples some years ago (of course not as originals...). Some Dutch collectors must remember this (Show of Arnhem/Duiven).

What is new and very dangerous is the oxidation of the canister. Luckily WHSammler and Tom also pointed out the anomalies in the lettering and the markings. Thanks guys! I think that the sheet metal can also be considered as a red flag. Compare with the originals in this thread... The sheet metal on this fake looks to be thicker (I should have it in hand...)...

I wonder what the maker would think of all this... He really was a very nice guy, who never swindled anyone and who was an artist as a metal worker. May he rest in peace...

                      Greetings,

                      Lucius
