Looks like they are fixed on the MP40 mag-pouch, so it could be worn around the lower legs when jumping.

Yes I am - and the fact that those great pics have been shot at Kreta confirmes it, as MP40 mag-pouches were worn there that way during the jump.

I have handed a surviving example once.

Yes-no: It was not made in the factory, but the adding of the straps looks to good to be "field-made", IMO this was done in the barracks by the company leather-specialist.
