Can anyone tell me if this is authentic or not. If it is what was it for? As I understand it FERTIGUNGSTELLE means "ready area". the part with the swastika appears to be made of copper. The raised parts are actually seperate pieces that are riveted on. the key itself to have been chromed. It is such a simple key it is hard for me to imagine that it went to somthing as important as the rocket site. Well any input would help. Thanks, Sal

Dear Sal,
Looks quite unbelievable with that oversized swastika (on a KEY!) and RZM mark (on a key!) and that chunky clunker attached to the key. Not something I would believe in, no matter how good the story connected to it is.
Moved this into the equipment forum. Hard to give this thread the right home but the equipmenet guys may know more will definitely be better with tool marks than me. I just offered you my gut feeling.
Cheers, FrankCheers, Frank

A "nuclear key"???? Well, the nuclear keys are more modern things... But could this be the final step to launching a wonder-weapon? Just my fantasies But if it is a real thing, it does not look to me like a real key for locking something /too simple/. o it can be a decorated key for the important final step of launching a weapon planned to change the war..... I know I read too much science fiction

Thanks Theodor, The silence was killing me! Boy do you have an overactive imagination. I think Im going to side with you on this,... a decorative commemorative key to launch a nazi super weapon! Its rarity is unfathomable, and all encompasing jealousy has silenced all the other viewers of this thread. Obviously. Sal

Boy, the sceptics abound! I'm going to write to Konrad Dannenberg and I expect I will hear back from him somthing like this,..."ah yes zis vass ze key fur ze vasser closset, you see heer ver it sess ready area sirty fife?...zat vass code fur vat you americanss zo quvaintly call... nummer two." Then we shall see who laughs loudest! Sal
P.S. Thanks Wood, any comment is a blessing!

Well, if your looking for opinions, mine is that the RZM stamp and large swaz are just too much... I mean a key that requires an RZM stamp just doesn't make sense to me, and probably not to anyone else who understands what that stamp was used for . But as far as looking cool and inspiring wild fantasies... for that it is outstanding!!

So someone would have gone thru the trouble of making a fake fantasy key? Seing the condition its in, knowing how mugh the germans loved to stamp everything, and knowing lots of strange things happen in wars, I believe this thing might be real. You should try to find more info about Penemunde, and find out if a Fertigunstelle did existe. If SS guys were involved, is it realy that suprising to see an RZM stamp. Didnt they sometimes stamp spoons, water bottles, mess tins, etc?
I know I have a motor identification plate from a french Citroëne car used by the germans, and guess what: it has a Waffen Ampt stamp on it!

Hi Guys, Thanks for the responses. Well this is a lot more fun now! I still think this thing could be real but I'm not gonna hold my breath. The one thing that does seem strange is what Jean-Loup commented on... it would be a lot of trouble to go to for a piece that nobody would be hunting for. It is really well made with seperate pieces riveted on very well and so on. We may know the answer soon as I actually WAS able to get ahold of Konrad Dannenberg (one of the peenemunda scientists who the U.S. brought over to work for NASA), and he said I should send him pictures of it and he would tell me if he recognizes it and if so what it was for. Very exiteing! Be patient guys, he said to send it through the regular post so I don't know how long until I get a response. I guess he does'nt have email,...strange.
Thanks for your comments and check back, Sal

key
I think this is a complete fantasy piece. First, the RZM did not code locks or keys, so having an RZM mark, for me, immediately puts it into the faker department. Second, the brass 'Peenemünde' disc looks like those fantasy 'Berghof', SS Cantine, etc. discs that came from England in the 1980s. I can't remember if there was a Peenemünde type as well, but the disc looks similar in style and construction.
To me it looks like a possibly original hotel key (or something along those lines) that was subsequently covered with markings and insignia to enhance the value.
I doubt that it was a commemorative key--if a key was given or produced as a special commemoration, I'm sure it would be more attractive than this, with a quality design.
Anyway, that's my opinion.
