If I understand correct, You are referring to the gasmasks wich have a blue snout ("Anschlußstück") and blue round frames for the eyes.

According to Schlicht/Angolia, Uniformen und Ausrüstung Band 1, page 422, the blue colour should show parts out of iron instead out of light metall to prevent their use with objects that might be damaged by magnetic metall. Iron was used to replace Aluminium which was needed for more important things. Schlicht/Angolia quote a Luftwaffen-Verordnungsblatt from 08. Juli 1943 which mentions that iron should be used. Snout and Eyeframes should be painted blue, the remaining metall-parts should be zink-coated.

According to a very advanced gasmask-collector the blue colour shall denote use be non-combatants, like fire-police etc. See his webpage:

    http://gasmasklexikon.com/Bilder/GM30.Fw..jpg

"GM-30 mit blauer Anschluss Stueck und Augenringen waren allen uniformierten Einheiten vorbehalten, die nach der Genfer Konvention nicht den Kampftruppen angehoerten (z.B. Feuerschutzpolizei, Schutzpolizei, Technische Nothilfe, Luftschutzpolizei...)"

I have and have had several gasmask with the blue parts. Everytime the eyeframes and the ring for attaching the snout to the gasmask-corpus were of iron. My gasmasks with green eyframes and snout only had non-iron parts.

So You can choose which explanation You like more.

If I remember correct I have only seen blue-painted gasmaks with dates 1943 and 1944.

Does anyone have a gasmask with blue-painted, magnetic eyeframes which older than 1943?

        Hello Luca,

difficult to say. I wanted only one Gasmask. Then I realized that there are differences, an now I five Gasmasks.

You can choose between Gasmaske 30 (made of rubberized fabric) and 38 (made of rubber). Gasmasks 30 have three different snouts where the "Filter" is screwed in. Then there is a short and a long canister. The short variant exists with two different closures.

The Gasmaske 38 is made from black or green rubber. Both Gasmask 30 and 38 exist with blue painted magnetic parts.

I could not decide wich to sell and which to keep, so I kept several.

The green ones are mor common than the blue ones. And it is possible, that the blue ones are not military but fire-brigade etc. (see my previous post). If I were You, I might keep the green one.

More important than the colour is the state of preservation for me. I prefer a clean and undamaged mask in a canister without rust and original paint.

        Hope this helps a bit

        Johannes
