canteen and messkit

hi,
got this in a lot I bought recently. any comments would be appreciated. I dont dare try and unbuckle the cup from the canteen, as i dont want to break the leather. The leather seems strong enough, but dont want to take the chance. should i mess with any of the surface rust or leave it?

as a bonus the messkit came with utensils. i think the maker says ?N 44. Anybody know what that maker would be?
