Field Phone with extra attachment - Help Needed

Here is a field phone I just picked up this weekend. Everything looks good about, but my question is about the piece on top. The metal plate on it says that it is for the 33 field phone and it is dated 1937.

Any idea what this piece is called? Was is commonly used in the field etc?

Last pic - Any ideas about the piece on top that the reciever sits on would be helpful.

What you have there is a field phone Model 33. The phone rest is a not so common attachment used in command posts, semi-permanent installations, and staff offices, etc as a desk phone. Not uncommon to find mismatched hand set and phone base due to replacement of broken parts. The battery is neet addition.

P.S. I met a Brad Posey at my CLC3/CAS3 course, Fort Lee, back in 2002/2003. You wouldn't be the same guy?
