    Essen behalters-renovation advice sought

does anyone out there have any ideas on the right way to go about restoring an essen behalter?

having picked up a rusty one, i'd care to take it up to display standards...two lid bolts on one side have sheared so should also be in for some part replacement...

enamel inside also a little time worn.

should i start going over it with a steel bristle brush and clean off the rust, or as i feel that might be, is this a sacriligious act on a beautiful classic piece of landseer kit?

it was made by Geithainer Emaillierwerk, info here...http://www.geo-geithain.de/geschichte.html

the name Grassler und Schmidt is also featured on the front of this iconic two handled food container.

and would anyone suggest where date stamps may be found?

anyone with pictures of their own food containers are welcome to post them. in fact, ive got a real appetite for starting a behalters thread and seeing some dished up for a good goggle.

    thanks.

as a further note that maybe interesting to collectors, the two bars across the lid of the rations can have the initials 'ANDr' with the A and N sharing the same vertical line...does anyone know the meaning of this?

i have now began work with steel bristle brush and cut my finger on the sharp edges to the base....

but between myself and the collecting community at large, i'm loving every second of that sting!

next stage, if anyone there has advice, is to locate decent wermacht green for this.

another question-can the blue enamel inner lining be restored in any way?

    thanks for reading.

another question...two metal 'loops' on the underside of the blue enamel lined lid, similar width to water bottle early metal cup riemen loop...what are these for...a ladle handle perhaps?

Here you have some pictures of mine hot food container (essenbehälter). No stamps present also no stamps can be found on the straps. Can you place some pictures of your hot food container?

my god that is a beauty!!!

but i cant send pics coz i havent the membership...

do you know a way to post pics in a helpful manner without yet being able to get membership??

for your record the green enamel in your one is blue in mine...

also the wing nuts on the lid are differently shaped, with one ear...

appreciate the nod from essen behalters communty- i KNOW there is a rich seam out there...

oops, sorry to forget-those straps are great. mine are similar, tan, 43 marked.

curious though you have no makers name on the front as i have described in above postings...maybe yours is post 42 or something, as in no id to speak of...check those top bars that hold lid onto body...at the hinge end, arent there any initials stamped as i have previously described....?if you can help re pics tell me...

thanks again for your generous outing of a top condition scram tin.

heres a link for a substance that apparently proofs up patchy enamel, as in my behalters liner...anyone know of a better product that safely patches up black patches in enamel, so it watertights once again?

                    thanks in advance
