    German face mask?

I picked this up months ago on eBay for the whopping sum of about $20. Kind of like a gas mask, but it only covers the mouth and nose. I've never seen anything like this in photos or books or anywhere else for that matter. I have doubts about it being from WWII, but it is made by Auer and has a 1940 date on it. The straps have the same springs that are on German gas masks, too. Inside are a few markings, one which looks like "aba 242" and another that says "1 14362".

On the front, where the filter would be attached, it's marked "AUER-'Lix'". I don't have a filter for it unfortunately. I'd love to find one, but I don't even know what would fit!

Just guessing: looks like a kind of dust mask, used in the industry?

Edit: found such a mask - Auer Lix - in this collection:

It is listed as a 1960ies mask, but maybe it was used from older times?
