    Shovel question

Can anyone tell me the nationality of a field shovel that is marked SA in a rectangle on the blade? The leather holder has "gut" stamped on the inside. Holder is mustard color, strap and belt loops are a dark brown or black leather and the handle has a dark green paint. Any help appreciated. I don't have images but thought that everyone would know what the shovel looked like. It is the same style as a Wehrmacht Heer shovel.

Hi Richard, the "SA" marking is Finnish Army. So that is where your shovel has come from

      Hi Richard,

The GUT stands for Schuermann & Co., Walter,Lederwarenfabrik Bielefeld. The painted handle may be overpainted. The mustard color sounds to me as the newly faked tropical Ersatz holders. The original ones were sand-colored.

The SA has just been explained by Adrian.

Thanks very much for the reply guys. Would it be normal to have a small round hole in the blade of the shovel close to the edge about the size of a tack head? This hole appears to have been created purposely during manufacture.

Bart, I may not be describing the color exactly. It does appear to be a tannish sand color but came with this shovel. It is also aged and worn naturally over time. Artificial aging could not be this good.
