Hi Gary
I could be wrong but could that thing be a clamp on silencer?? There is a picture of one in Darrin Weavers Book on German Semi auto rifles (Hitlers Garands) . In that book is pictured the regular grenade discharger , the special discharger for the G/ K 43, and a picture of the very rare clamp on silencer that looks very like a grenade launcher same clamp etc. If memory serves me out of the three items it looks more like the silencer Than the other two.
werner,
thanks for the link to the web page I tried it although the photo's would not display
Sean,
its defiantly a grenade launcher, rifled inside and takes the standard type rife grenade, just that the rifle barrel is different, this is the second one I have had, the other is ground dug and in a very poor state, the one pictured I have not cleaned yet but other that a light rusting in places looks very sound

Thanks for the photo's BUT, the picture are of the usual type of grenade launcher, notice the barrel the example I have posted, the barrel is different, yet all the books state there are only 2 types, this type I have not seen referenced .
I have highlighted the differences on the outside below
cheers,
Gary
The key is the rifling on the inside, it is for rifle grenades. That is the only round that used rifling like that. The silencers were entirely different on the inside. The ones used for the MP44 curved barrel was only the launching part, and it was used as a flash supressor as a large chamber.
In reference to two types of grenade launchers, it does not mean a slight barrel variation such as we see, it means the early style of launcher which is of the spigot style.
Again, my setup which shows how the inert rounds had bakelite on the bottom which engaged the rifling in the launcher.
I think what we are seeing, based on what Gary is presenting as a different style, is merely a simplier method in making the barrel....perhaps a later version with an easier milling process in making the barrel and the rifling.
