Toolbox field altered into medical box?

    Hello to all

I was able to pick up this metal box which saw a second life as verbandkasten.

IMO the medical field altering is 100 % period done but I would like to know what the original purpose could have been....Maybe some sort of vehicle toolbox?

No visible markings found so far. Feldgrau paint is noticable under the once white paint. Red color of the crosses looks less intense in real life. The box measures 52cm length x 12cm height.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Cheers

    Jan

2...Traces inside of what looks like black sprayed (?) paint. The interior has a metal/silver look, it appears to be sprayed as well.

Hi Jan, first of all, nice box! Second, have you encountered such closings on other German boxes? Do not know why, but these locks do not look like the usual German types to me - maybe captured French or Brit box, sprayed to become to German service?

              Hello Theo

Indeed, it could be prefectly another nations box...I didn't mention that in my initial post. But I'm afraid my knowledge is to limited. Maybe I'll post it in the international section to get more opinions.

              Cheers

Indeed an interesting piece Jan, but not easy to find the origin
When you first mentioned the white layer underneath, I was thinking on Luftschutz. But the lack of inside compartments and - as noted by Theodor - the rather non-German handle and locks, could point to a foreign box. It is a beautiful item nonetheless and will make a perfect addition to your collection.

                Cheers,
                Laurens

                  Hi,

here is a box that I have for several years now.....
It got also a second life as Verbandkasten, but is it German period done

I can read the text under the painting it says.. "Vorratssachen fur bodengerate-Motoren EL201 u. EL203 (DKW)"

                  It smells medical inside....

                        Laurens,

the underneath layer is feldgrau, not white...It has been repainted white.

The position and style of the red crosses and the text 'Verbandkasten' really do make my think it was used by german military forces during WWII. Although you will always have sceptic people who will say this could be perfectly post-war added by some sort of organisation. On that point I'm afraid we can't be sure 1000 % when it was re-used, although I never saw boxes re-used post-war with the text "verbandkasten" on it!

                        Francois,

Well, at least you're able to read what the original purpose was before the alternation into first aid box!
The frame inside once had probably the original manual... IMO that wooden construction looks typical medical (with all the compartiments), but doesn't originally belong to the box itself. Maybe taken from another existing medical box? I'm just brainstorming here offcourse...

Does it looks repainted in a way? And what kind of color is it exactly (difficult to see from your pictures)? Any traces of former paint somewhere?

                        Cheers

                          Jan,

only the lid is repainted in a little bit greener color with the red-cross
The rest of the box has it original color that you can see on the other pics..

IMO the inside is later added as you said, maybe from an other box

                          Thanks..
