    Interesting, especially the Reichsbahn suggestion. The use of black felt sort of threw me from the start. It seemed an unlikely choice for gear meant for the German army. At least the the consensus (so far) is leaning towards war-time manufacture as opposed to some post war variety. Thanks for the replys to date Grubhy and Chris, has anyone else seen black felt winter boots like these?

          Thanks for the clarification Chris, apologies for the double post. Once again my computer "glitched" when I clicked the submit reply window and it threw me out. I did not realize my initial post on the bottom of page one did indeed load until after I tried again.

          regarding the brass plate-hole information, I see the pendulum has swung back again. Post war boots after all huh? I take it this is the hole Gran Sasso referred to, one atop each shaft:
