Pioneer Shovel + Cover

Hi everyone

received these this week but I have a few questions:

1st the shovel cover: Are these left-overs from WWI ? Picture no# 6 shows the use of them in WWII. No stamps on it whatsoever.

2nd the shovel. This one also has no (visible) markings, but as you can see it is very short. Is this also a left-over from WWI ?

First pictures shows the shovel next to a long handled vehicle shovel (marked 1943) with a total length of 112 cm. Length of the short shovel is aprox 63 cm.

btw, the cover did not come with the shovel. both were seperate buys

Here is one real standard WWII engineer shovel with his original first type black leather case
Both are 1940 dated with total lenght 93 cm (riveted iron shovel with R Dahlmant Sohn 1940 marking)
This shovel is the same as park shovel (or vehicule shovel) with handle shorter
on the same pic you can see two standard leather carrier for shovel, pick and hatchet case.
brown leather with J.Moll Goch 1939 date and
black leather with C.Riese Berlin SO16 1941

Thanks for your reply, I know that yours is the standard cover for a pioneer shovel. (I'm still looking for one like that for my collection )

My initial question was if mine was a WW1 leftover. As you can see my carrier was also used, but I was wondering if someone knew more about it.

btw, it seems like your carrier is missing the hook, to hang it to the hanger..

Your cover looks a bit weird ,might just be the pictures but , how is the leather on your cover ? is it cracked and dried ?
I would expect to see markings on these.

Yes, the leather is somewhat dry and some cracks are there. Its a little difficult to put the shovel in (I have to be careful not to damage the sewing)

several of this type are coming into the collector market a few years ago

How rare are these shovel covers? Did the German Pioneer units use the same type of shovel cover in WW1?
