I have read in several sources (including Angolia) that the Germans quit using black canteen cups very early in the war. I have a vet acquired example with all matching pieces that seems to disprove this...

Canteen Myth???

it's hard to explain how it did work, but roughly makers produced with what was available at the time. Official notes make the rules but there is always a gap between theory and reality. For example, the maker CFL produced aluminium black painted cups and steel olive painted cups the same year of 1943 (with their respective canteen of course). According to the change of features of these two canteens both produced by CFL the same year, i do think they were not produced jointly, but in sequence, one after the other, depending on what metal was available on the market. Even if during the war aluminium was considered as highly strategic metal used for airplanes (for example), some makers of individual equipments and fieldgear still used some for their productions.
you own a very nice one....

Hello
The metal cup started to be produced in 1943 ,as previously mentioned ,these alu cup were obviously produced untill 1943. I have own and seen many canteen and I have yet to see a metal green painted dated 1942.
Last alu canteen produced before the transition to the metal ones.
Concerning the black paint that is a bit unusual at that period as most factory already painted them green. proof that not all producer followed the rules ( like quist !!!)
Nice canteen
Best regards

ciao!
I am not sure if I understood you.
I was refering to metal cup painted green ( red or green inside),the earliest I have seen are dated 1943 , now ,if someone does have a 42 dated ,please post pictures. To answer Laurent ,no I have never seen a metal one painted black but I did see the late war " emaille" in black.
I am well aware that alu cup were painted black all the way to 1943 ,most however were repainted green or came out of the factory green.
The one posted here being in near mint condition would explain why it is still black
Best Regards

Nice canteen. I never understand all these "rules" we collectors create. How do we know for sure when steel cups first came out and when aluminum ones ceased? By observing original examples. Here is a 1942 dated steel tropical cup. The vet had this until last year. All matching and dated 1942.Attached FilesWilli
