    cloth gas mask canister cover

I tried to do a search on this but found nothing so I will ask. Perhaps I did not use the correct terms. Several years ago there were a bunch of German looking gas mask canisters on the market with olive green cloth covers. I picked one up because I wanted the cloth straps for another one I had. I have never seen a period photo of a cloth cover on these things. The seller said it was a"tropical version" - yeah, sure. Anyway, does anyone have the story behind these things? Were they WW II leftovers that another army used post war or what?

    Mike,
The M38 style gasmask canisters with the olive green cloth cover on the lid and main body section are post war manufacture. The examples that I have seen are dated in the mid to late 1950's as the Bundeswehr was organized in 1955.

      Hi Mike,

these are indeed 100% BW issue.

They surface for sale on auction sites, and the occasional uber dealer, where they are generally described as either late war ( by around 10 years!) or tropical.

      Here is the Gasmaske 54.
