It was allegadly liberated from a Kriegsmarine surface vessel.

I've also been trying to find information on this compass. I recently purchased one with its storage box which is LW marked. It is called an Einheitspeilscheibe
or unit pinpointing disk. The sighting fixture is different than yours, but it looks like the same type of equipment.
