entrenching tool

Hi All
Have a original German entrenching tool and cover coming soon it has post war green painted handle done post war by the Norwegians will I be able to strip the paint off ok and what is the best thing to use and do I need to treat the wood with something after??

I used Nitromors on the entrenching tool that I had with wire wool. Once it was paint free I just waxed the shaft (if you'll pardon the expression!!) with the stuff you put on old pine furniture. Came up a treat.
