knobelbecher question (german boots)

I just got these boots and there's a thingy on the heel of the boots, a sort of a lip. Anyone know where the're from ? what unit or so. On the inside of the shaft there are no pullstraps and there never were. was this regular?
Maybe Manny the knobelbecherprofessor knows.

I have a pair exactly like them, except the projections have been cut off flush.

They don't have pulls, and never did. They also have heel irons but no hobnails, and apparently never did.

Other than that they are textbook marching boots.

Always wondered why.....
