    DRGM compass

I've just got this nice 1939 stamped mapcase off ebay and snuggling inside was this:

D.R.G.M. marked compass by Busch Rathenow. Anyone care to comment on it?

Nice looking compass, but there should be a lid with a polished metal surface on the inside that can be used as a mirror, otherwise it would be very difficult to shoot a bearing with any accuracy. Perhaps the previous owner only used it to take / apply bearings to a map.... but I don't know why you would want to do that.

I know what you mean but there is no evidence of anything being attached, broken off etc - this is it as it was issued.

Having a rule on the side, maybe it was used only with the maps?

I had one before that I sold off. They do not come with a lid, but mine had the original string that is attached underneath.

I found mine at a flea market in Germany and like flashlights, most compass were commercial in nature and for civilian camping, Volksmarch uses. You have to believe it wound up in the hands of a Soldier.

So it was just for use with the maps... seems like a waste as you would need another compass to shoot a bearing, unless I am missing something.

It is not used just for maps, it can be held afield. It can be used for maps, just like the other kind.

Ohhhhh, now I see There are little "nubs" that form a sight so that it can be used as a marching compass. First time that I have seen one like that.

                    This is a hitlerjugend kompas.
The same kompas whit a mirror and a lid are the army models..
Your kompas belongs in a small brown bag, that's how it leave's the factory in those days

It can be held afield and is not limited to maps. Similar to the Retro Bowl other type, it can be applied to maps.
