Unknown Luftwaffe Flight Helmet Id Needed

    Hi Guys,
I've had this flight helmet a while and decided it was time to bring it out and figure out what it is. At first, I thought it was Kriegsmarine, as it has a rear adjustment strap similar to the ones they used for small attack craft. It is amde from a khaki brown cotton material. On the other hand it has a top oxygen mask clip and also side lugs for an oxygen mask. It has a Karl Heisler tag inside. Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone know what it is?

    Merry CHristmas,

    Gerard

Very unique helmet. I have never seen such a piece before. Where did you get it?

      Flight helmet

Almost looks like its purpose was just to hold on an 02 mask as opposed to a "flight helmet". Maybe used for a passenger or some kind of 02 testing???

      Regards,
      Mike

What makes you believe its not Kriegsmarine issue? Here's a photo of a "Neger" (one man electric, submersible torpedo boat) pilot. It was equipped with an demand oxygen system. You can see the mask clips on his helmet. Looks like your helmet is the same, only its adapted for a three point mask. Pretty interesting, exotic piece you have there!

          Hi,
That was my first thought, but the difference is that the goggle straps in the rear are not on mine and mine has the top oxygen mask support. Perhaps a variation? You have the clearest photo I have seen of the side bolts though. Mine look to be about the same.

I don't believe that's a goggle strap on the rear, more likely the wind has blown the tightening strap up against the back of the pilot's head. Also there would be no need for goggles in a slow moving, fully enclosed craft, they'd only fog up.
